SHIELD COLLAPSE

The nuclear based area effect spells use mana to create a shield that
protects the caster and his party. When the shield collapses, everyone
in the mage's group who is in the room can suffer some temporary penalties.
These may include blindness, negative modifiers to hitroll, increased
armor class, poison, and decreased strength, all of which will persist
until cured or until the penalties wear off. Shield collapse also has a
chance of allowing the nuclear spell to totally vaporize anyone in the
party, leaving nothing but a shadow on the ground.

Chance of shield collapse is based on the total amount of mana used to
construct the shield. No matter how much mana is available, however,
shield collapse is always possible.
